VOICE will fix this: Engagement as a vanity metric in B2B

Here's a pattern I keep seeing. Marketing teams celebrate engagement numbers while their Sales teams struggle to close. The dashboards look good. The pipeline doesn't.

The gap is that they have not taken the time to build authority.

Engagement tells you someone noticed your content.

Authority tells you they trust the source.

Those are two very different things, and only one of them helps close deals.

I built a framework called VOICE to address this. It stands for Viewpoint, Ownership, Insight, Cadence, and Enablement. Each letter maps to a specific function that builds credibility into your content.

The short version:

  • Viewpoint captures real experience.
  • Ownership puts a person behind the message.
  • Insight teaches from execution.
  • Cadence keeps authority compounding.
  • Enablement makes sure Sales can actually use your content in real conversations.

You can go deeper into the framework here.

The part most teams miss is enablement.

They create content for visibility, likes, impressions, follows. But they never design it so Sales can reference it when a prospect raises an objection or needs reassurance during their research.

When you build content with enablement in mind, you connect your content activity directly to revenue activity. That's when things change.

Here's the one thing I'd suggest you do this week: look at your last five pieces of content and ask, "Could my Sales team use this in a conversation?"

If the answer is no for most of them, you have an authority gap.

VOICE is one component of a bigger system I call RevCo (Revenue Content Operations). I'll share more about RevCo in upcoming emails or you can view and activate the full framework here.

Yours in Revenue,

We all want to know which marketing effort led to which business, but marketing attribution, as we know it, is dead. If you are still crediting closed deals the same way you always have, you are making budget calls on data that no longer tells the truth. I know this firsthand. I have silently influenced millions of dollars in software purchases. A brand I use, a software I kept seeing, a friend's recommendation, a platform I used at an old job and wanted again. The vendors never saw any of...

I'm sick of the word 'Podcast'. This might surprise you. Let me explain. Businesses are getting wise to something. Creating video content with their prospects, SME, and Executives is an amazing way to accomplish several things at once: Creating thought leadership to share to the world Being seen in more places (aka visibility) Brand awareness Speed to market in content creation So what's hindering them? The word "podcast." What businesses are creating today are not podcasts. They are simply...

AI made it easy to flood the feed with content that says nothing. The marketers standing out are putting real people on camera instead. Rocio and I sat down with Heike Young on The Business of Marketing to talk about employee generated content (EGC), and how to build a program that doesn't fall apart after the first month. Heike led content at Salesforce and Microsoft, then stepped out on her own as a consultant, so she has seen EGC work from both sides. If your team is trying to get its own...
