The Quiet Reason Your Best Prospects Trust You Before You Ever Meet

On more than one occasion, I have had clients tell me how elated they were when a prospect mentioned they had been consuming their content for months before ever reaching out.

In one case, the prospect had been listening to the client’s podcast. In another, the prospect had been watching the client’s YouTube videos. I have seen the same thing inside my own company. A client we thought had gone cold months earlier came back and told us we had earned their trust through the content we kept sharing.

That is the quiet power of content that actually adds something new. When your content gives a reader a real insight, a real story, or a real opinion they cannot find on ten other sites, it builds trust in the background. Generic content does not do that. Generic content gets consumed and forgotten, and the brand behind it does not stick.

There is a name for what makes the difference. Information gain.

Information gain is the measure of whether your content adds new knowledge or repeats what is already available elsewhere. It is the difference between an article that summarizes the topic and an article that teaches the reader something they can actually use.

And information gain does not only come from new ideas. It can come from new formats. A written explanation turns into something more valuable when you put a face behind it in a video. A dense paragraph becomes easier to understand when you replace it with a chart or a simple diagram.

The underlying knowledge may already exist, and the format itself can add clarity, context, and trust that the text alone could not deliver.

In my newest article, I break down:

  • What information gain actually means, and why it now shapes AI search visibility
  • The difference between information gain and what most people call thought leadership
  • How format can add information gain, from expert-led video to clearer visuals
  • A real example of reshaping a client’s generic article library into content that earns trust
  • A simple set of questions you can use to test any article on your site

After you read it, take a look at your last five blog posts and ask yourself one question. Could any other company in your industry have honestly published the same article? If the answer is yes, you have a starting point.

We all want to know which marketing effort led to which business, but marketing attribution, as we know it, is dead. If you are still crediting closed deals the same way you always have, you are making budget calls on data that no longer tells the truth. I know this firsthand. I have silently influenced millions of dollars in software purchases. A brand I use, a software I kept seeing, a friend's recommendation, a platform I used at an old job and wanted again. The vendors never saw any of...

I'm sick of the word 'Podcast'. This might surprise you. Let me explain. Businesses are getting wise to something. Creating video content with their prospects, SME, and Executives is an amazing way to accomplish several things at once: Creating thought leadership to share to the world Being seen in more places (aka visibility) Brand awareness Speed to market in content creation So what's hindering them? The word "podcast." What businesses are creating today are not podcasts. They are simply...

AI made it easy to flood the feed with content that says nothing. The marketers standing out are putting real people on camera instead. Rocio and I sat down with Heike Young on The Business of Marketing to talk about employee generated content (EGC), and how to build a program that doesn't fall apart after the first month. Heike led content at Salesforce and Microsoft, then stepped out on her own as a consultant, so she has seen EGC work from both sides. If your team is trying to get its own...
